The precipice of an engineering degree is always the most exciting. Once you have your scores in hand, the next step is to decide upon a field of study. Computer science, electronics, electrical, mechanical, textile, industrial and production, petroleum… the list could go on and on. But maybe you just honed in on one.

Do Circuits and ammeters excite you? You love measuring things in mAh. The internal transfer of power in devices fascinates you.

If the answers to these questions are yes, you have got good reasons to choose electrical engineering. But if you are still wondering about the fees, syllabus and career scope after electrical engineering, below is a list of reasons why electrical engineering would be a great fit for you.

What you study in Electrical Engineering?

If you have an artistic bent of mind, you’ll find little to do during the degree. Most of it focuses on technical concepts along with Math, Physics, and a bit of mechanical/ computer science sprinkled here and there.

A few of the things you study during your course include:

  • Electrical Machine
  • Analog and digital circuits
  • Signal systems
  • Power system
  • Control System
  • Power Electronics
  • Electrical Drives
  • Electrical Measurement
  • Circuit theory

Do these names appeal to you and excite you? If not, you might want to look at why you are going for electrical engineering. The discipline is tough and requires steady commitment and focus if you want to succeed (a.k.a get a financially lucrative job) ultimately.

The best colleges to pursue Electrical Engineering

Electrical engineering is one of the core engineering disciplines, and unlike some other disciplines (like textile engineering), is offered almost everywhere. However, to ensure that you get the best education and a desirable job after completing the course, you need to choose the right college. There is no use of just pursuing the course for the sake of getting a degree.

No doubt, the best institutions to pursue an engineering degree are IITs or NITs. But the choices are not limited to these colleges only. Here are some more colleges you can consider to pursue electrical engineering:

  • Jadavpur University
  • VIT University – Vellore Institute of Technology
  • BIT Mesra – Birla Institute of Technology
  • DTU – Delhi Technological University (DCE)
  • Manipal Institute of Technology (MIT Manipal)
  • Thapar Institute of Engineering and Technology
  • CEG – College of Engineering Guindy, Anna University
  • BITS Pilani – Birla Institute of Technology and Science
  • SRM Institute of Science and Technology, Chennai
  • Guru Gobind Singh Indraprastha University, Delhi

Career Scope for electrical engineers

Everything, more or less, springs from here. What all is possible with this degree?

Most people think of boring, heavy-weight machines, or working in dusty corners fixing up the power supply. This is absolutely untrue.

As an electrical engineer, your services will be needed in big companies. Self-driving cars aren’t made on their own. High-powered satellites aren’t pieced together by themselves. Your phone doesn’t grow a high-speed processor on its own. Environment-friendly technologies don’t spring up from the earth. The electrical engineer comes in to create all of this.

The most abundant jobs are available in power generation, transmission, and distribution companies in any of the textile, steel, cement, fertilizer, petrochemical, shipping, traction, and automobile sectors.

Companies that hire electrical engineers

As an electrical engineer, you can easily get a job in both government and private organizations. However, to get a job in a PSU, you need to clear GATE exam. Given-below is the list of some of the top private and public sector companies:

Private Companies Government Companies
Shell GAIL
TATA technologies ONGC
DRDO SAIL
Dr. Reddy’s Laboratories Power Grid
HCL Technologies
Google
Microsoft
Power grid corporation of India Ltd
Samsung
Sony Corporation

If a job is not your plan after a B.Tech in Electrical Engineering, you can take a Masters in any of the sub-domains of Electrical Engineering such as electronics, digital computers, power engineering, telecommunications, control systems, RF engineering, signal processing, instrumentation, microelectronics etc.

Package of Electrical Engineers

Electrical engineers earn well. It is all, of course, a matter of your skills and capabilities. Anywhere between 1-6 LPA is offered to a fresher depending on their skill set, which improves over time based on your performance.

If you are ready to put in the hard work needed to draw diagrams, follow circuit paths, and understand machines (big or small), a BTech in Electrical Engineering might just be for you. Good luck!
