If you have opted for the engineering field, you are considered a lucky soul in India. Future sorted, people think. A stable, secure job with good pay, they conclude.

However, if by chance you were to tell them that you are preparing for JEE to pursue an engineering degree in Production and Industrial Engineering, there would be polite nods and a look of incomprehension.

The picture has shifted. Instead of the well-known Google or Amazon, there is a blank frame. What is this stream, they now wonder? What are its prospects, people question?

If you have gotten disheartened by these reactions in the past, no need for that now. The below mentioned list of reasons will tell why a B.Tech. in Production and Industrial Engineering will be the right choice for you.

Scope of the course

This is one of the first things we look at when deciding upon a career or field of study. What are its prospects? Which profiles can I go for? Which companies will hire me after 4 years? Below are a few job profiles you can opt for after completing your B.Tech. in production and industrial engineering:

  • Quality Engineer
  • Plant Engineer
  • Manufacturing, Production and Distribution Ergonomics and Human Factor
  • Manufacturing Engineer
  • Make/Buy Analysis and Cost Estimation
  • Project Management
  • Process Engineers and Industrial Manager

The 4 most commonly talked about subdomains in this branch are Logistics & Supply Chain, Manufacturing, Consulting, and Procurement. Hence, any profile under these categories will be a fit for you.

Since the main job of engineers in this field is to optimize, expect a lot of management-style roles. Those in the other engineering fields make things. Industrial and product engineers optimize them. As long as people make things, IPEs will be needed.

If you still have doubts, below is a list of companies that hire industrial engineers:

  • Samsung
  • Pepsico
  • ZS Associates
  • JP Morgan Chase
  • MasterCard
  • Intel
  • Hyundai
  • L & T
  • Mahindra and Mahindra
  • Suzuki
  • Godrej
  • Mercedes Benz

Now if anyone doubts whether there are vacancies for Production and Industrial engineers, you can present this list to them.

Breadth of the roles

On the surface, production engineering is a mixture of manufacturing technology and science whereas industrial engineering deals with specialized industrial processes, operations, and management.

Sounds boring, right?

But what if you were to know that this field is actually an amalgamation of the technical, legal, artistic, and the industrial. How? Below are a few things you get to study:

  • Accounting
  • Chemistry
  • Math
  • Product design
  • Process design
  • Productivity
  • Supply chain
  • Administration
  • Quality systems management
  • Maintenance
  • Technical drafting
  • Inventory management
  • Human resources
  • Legal environment

Exciting, right? And for your Masters, you can choose to specialize in any one of them, thereby becoming an expert in that particular aspect of production.

Pay

Along with scope, this is what we look at. Our expected salary. You are taken care of here, too. As a production/ industrial engineer, you can expect to make anywhere from 1 lakh to 6 lakhs per annum based on your experience, right at the outset.

With the right attitude and information, you can carve a fulfilling career in production and industrial engineering. Wishing you the best of luck for the same!
