One of the major decisions for anyone is to decide upon the kind of work that they would do for the rest of their life.
A career, as it is termed, is for the long haul. It is the domain you choose. Sure, you might switch jobs many times or even be unemployed, but which field are you changing jobs in? Which area are you unemployed in?
If you are at any point in your life where you need to (finally, seriously) decide on your career path, then the words written below will help you chart a course to that perfect career.
What kind of sandwich would you like?
In one of his popular books, Mark Manson (very poetically) puts forward the question:
What flavour of sandwich would you like to eat?
Meaning, what do you care enough about that you’ll sail through the bad days for it?
If you are contemplating computer science, but you absolutely detest how tech companies lock you in a chair with a laptop on your knees, then you need to contemplate more.
If you want to study law, but can’t handle immense work pressure and studying book thicker than your thigh, then maybe law isn’t for you.
If you want to appear for UPSC exams, but you aren’t willing to give up on your freewheeling-through-fun lifestyle, then maybe you should go for a Masters after your undergrad.
The point is, everything will suck some of the time and you’ll have to make the sacrifice to cover the cost, sail the ship and keep walking, in spite of all the cringey bits.
Do you have an answer to this?
If yes, congratulations! You are well on your way to deciding which career you could choose.
If you don’t have a single answer, worry not. Here’s a plan of action:
Engage with all of your interests as deeply as possible
We all have misconceptions about ourselves, which include what we are good at and what we would love to do. When choosing the right career, this is dangerous. You might see yourself having fun coding inside all day, but when asked to do the same in reality, you realize how much you hate feeling unhealthy because of sitting and typing code all day.
You might think that you love acting on-stage but when you do get involved in a play, you find yourself drawn to being the director of it.
Fantasizing about a world tour feels so good, but then you can’t sit down to tear your fingers at the strings every day. You might dream of working in Porsche but when you study machine parts, you are bored out of your mind.
In a nutshell, you’ll never know it if you don’t try it.
Make a list now of all the things you are even remotely interested in and that you have thought of as a career choice. Talk to people already in that field and ask what it’s like for them. Take an online course. Find some freelance work online. Engage with these interests and notice how the experience is for you.
So, get your hands dirty and try different things to find out what you exactly want to do.
Once you have decided the field you want to pursue your career in, start preparing for it with full dedication. For instance, if you have decided that you want to become an engineer or a designer or a doctor, start looking for the best options to achieve your goal. Start preparing for engineering and medical entrance exams at the right time to get admission to your dream college.
Perfect career option does exist. And it’s waiting for you to finally find it.
