The National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET) is India’s premier medical entrance examination conducted by the National Testing Agency (NTA) every year. It is considered as one of the most competitive and challenging medical entrance examinations that provide students admissions to MBBS, BDS, AYUSH and other medical courses.

Every year almost a million students register for NEET in the hopes of getting a prestigious seat in India’s topmost and reputed medical and dental colleges. As per the reports, around 15.94 lakh students registered for NEET in the year 2020 against 15.19 lakh in the year 2019. This growth in the number of registrations is likely to stay prevalent for the NEET 2021 as well that will eventually increase the competitive nature of the exam.

Clearing NEET 2021 is a matter of immense hard work, dedication, consistency, and focus. According to reports, around 8 lakh Indian residents cleared NEET in the year 2019. However, only a handful of students cleared the exam with a 600+ score.

What is the relevance of 600+ score in NEET 2021?

The National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET) is supervised and conducted under the guidelines framed by the National Testing Agency (NTA). It considers NEET All India Rank (AIR) as the deciding factor for admission to undergraduate courses in the medical and dental colleges across India. This AIR is evaluated on the basis of NEET scores. Thus, a score of 600+ becomes essential for students to get an MBBS or BDS seat in the country’s topmost colleges.

How to get 600 score in NEET 2021?

NEET is considered as one of the toughest competitive examinations in the country and clearing it with a 600+ score can be a challenging task for many students. It is a mission that can only be completed with a proper vision and strategic NEET preparation plan. In NEET 2019, only 3 candidates scored 700 marks, 9 scored 695 marks and 27 students cleared the examination with a score of 690 to get admissions in the top Indian medical and dental colleges. This should be an encouragement for you to start preparing today for a better future tomorrow.

Getting a 600 score in NEET 2021 is largely dependent on the amount of hard work and dedication you put in for achieving your set target. Proper planning, scheduling and other preparatory tips can only provide you with a direction to proceed, but it is your will power and determination that will encourage you to follow a path that leads to success.

Here are some tips and suggestions that can guide your preparation for a 600+ score in NEET 2021:

1. Know the exam pattern and marks distribution

Before you start with your preparations, it is very important to understand the pattern and mark distribution system of the exam. NEET is primarily based on the concepts of Physics, Chemistry and Biology (Botany and Zoology). Following tables provide detailed information about exam pattern and mark distribution scheme for NEET 2021.

                                                                            NEET 2021 exam pattern
Exam Mode Offline (Pen and paper mode)
Exam Duration 3 hours (10:00 am – 01:00pm)
Exam Language English, Hindi, Assamese, Bengali, Gujarati, Kannada, Oriya, Urdu, Marathi, Tamil, and Telugu
Subjects Physics, Chemistry, Botany, and Zoology
Type of questions Multiple Choice Questions (MCQ)
Number of Questions 180
Marking scheme +4 for right answer; -1 for a wrong answer

                                                                       NEET 2021 marks distribution
Subject Number of questions Marks
Physics 45 180
Chemistry 45 180
Biology Botany – 45

Zoology – 45

360
Total 180 720

Aiming for a score of minimum 600 means that you need to answer at least 150 questions (out of 180) correctly without marking any incorrect answer. Thus, start your preparations with an aim to answer a minimum of 150 questions correctly. However, to be on the safer side, you should aim to answer 160-170 questions correctly in case you get unlucky with negative marking.

2. Know the complete syllabus

It is a no brainer that you should have comprehensive knowledge about NEET 2021 syllabus before planning your routine and timetable. The National Testing Agency (NTA) has put together a vast syllabus for the medical entrance examination. The respective syllabus is implemented after taking in references from the syllabi of various State Boards, Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE), Council Board of School Education (COBSE) and the National Council of Education Research and Training (NCERT). Complete analysis of syllabus will also allow you to take notes of the important and relevant topics from the class 12th board syllabus. This will further empower you to prepare for NEET and board examinations simultaneously.

3. Create an effective study plan

A vision is no less than an illusion without a proper strategic plan. The respective phrase truly signifies the importance of an effective study plan for the NEET 2021 preparation. In order to achieve a 600+ score in NEET 2021, you are strictly advised to develop a refined and constructive time table. This will not only help you with the division of the NEET syllabus (as per your convenience) but will also allow you to provide equal (or necessary) time to all the four subjects. Educational experts also suggest students plan a time table in such a way that they are able to complete their syllabus by November 2020. Since the exam is expected to take place in the month of May 2021, it will give you enough time for revision and practice. Here are some important things you should keep in mind when making a timetable for NEET preparation:

  • Make a time table taking into account the school hours, coaching class (or tuition), self-study, and some leisure time.
  • It should be framed in such a manner that it allows you to study, revise and practice each day.
  • Incorporate small breaks in the time table as they will help you to feel refreshed and energized.
  • Include enough revision time in your timetable to revise difficult and important topics multiple times.

You can also update your time table in accordance with your needs and requirements.

4. Refer to NCERT books

Books published by the National Council of Education Research and Training (NCERT) for classes 11th and 12th are considered as the best and most appropriate reference sources for carrying out your NEET 2021 preparations. According to subject experts and former NEET toppers, a major portion of NEET exam questions is based on the concepts mentioned in the NCERT books. Thus, it is supremely important to refer NCERT books for NEET 2021 preparation. You can also refer to the state textbooks as they are the adaptations of the NCERT books. Once you get confident enough to answer all the NCERT questions, you can look out for other reference books and study materials suggested by NEET experts. After all, referring to the best-recommended books is a significant part of an efficient preparation strategy.

5. Solve previous year question papers

Solving previous year’s question papers and analyzing their patterns is essential when you aim to score 600+ in the NEET examination. It will not only provide you with insights and ideas of what might come in the NEET 2021 question paper but will also help you in improving your time management skills. After you are able to successfully solve these question papers, you can easily frame your strategy for the main exam as you’ll have a comprehensive idea about how much time you need to allocate to each section beforehand.

6. Take online mock tests

Undertaking online mock tests and practice tests is a great way to prepare for NEET 2021. These tests allow you to analyze your performance while strengthening your confidence. Many online test platforms provide you with answer keys and detailed solutions which further allows you to remap and revise your preparation strategies based on your performance. Exclusive products like Aakash PracTest also conduct performance benchmarking at an All India Level, which proves to be of supreme help for such a competitive examination. Furthermore, these tests also help you in recognizing your strengths and weaknesses.

7. Revise important topics

Solving previous year’s question papers and undertaking mock tests will help you in identifying the important topics. According to educational experts, having a comprehensive understanding of these topics should be the main priority for the students as they are likely to carry maximum weightage. In order to attain a better understanding of the important topics, it is extremely important to revise them regularly. Below is the list of important topics for NEET 2021:

Important Topics NEET 2021

Physics Optics, Thermodynamics, Electrostatics, Current electricity, Electronic devices, Rotational Motion
Chemistry Chemical bonding and molecular structure, Thermodynamics, Solutions,  Equilibrium, Coordination compounds, s-block elements, p-block elements, GOC, Alcohol, PHenols and Ethers
Biology Biological classification,  Principles of inheritance and variation, Sexual reproduction in flowering plants, Morphology of flowering plants, Diversity of living organisms, Molecular basis of inheritance, Human physiology, Biology and Human welfare

Trends reveal that the above-mentioned topics have carried maximum mark weightage in the last 4 year’s NEET question papers. Thus, it is always better to stay a step ahead with a proper revision of these topics.

8. Practice regularly

We as students must have heard the famous proverb “practice makes a man perfect” numerous times in our school life. This is true in every sense, especially when we talk about scoring 600+ in NEET 2021. Various researches claim that humans have a tendency to forget things if not practised and revised regularly. This makes regular practicing of all the topics essential. Furthermore, you should not forget that the exam pattern has negative marking. Thus, you cannot leave any scope of errors when aiming to achieve such a high score as incorrect answers can stop you from getting the desired results.

9. Hone your time management skills

NEET is a time-bound examination as students are required to answer all the questions in a period of 3 hours only. Since scoring 600+ in NEET 2021 requires answering of at least 150 questions correctly (without a single wrong answer), you should be prepared to race against time. Regular practising along with revisions is the only proven way to perfect your time management skills for the NEET examination. According to educational experts, time management is as important as any other preparatory aspects. If a student is able to answer 50-55 questions within a time frame of one hour, the chances of getting a good score get considerably high.

10. Keep yourself healthy

Last but not least, keeping up a good physical and mental health is essentially important during NEET 2021 preparation. According to health experts, a tired and a stressed mind is the biggest nemesis of human efficiency and productivity. Furthermore, it also makes it hard for the student to understand and memorize concepts. Staying unhealthy during the preparatory phase can eventually hinder your preparation tactics and induce a feeling of discontent and demotivation. Thus, it is essential to formulate a lifestyle routine along with a study routine with special attention to diet, rest, and sleep. Eat well, sleep well and take a break from studies to do things that make you feel relaxed and stress-free.

Dedication, commitment to excellence, and a disciplined routine are the main keys that will help you to clear NEET 2021 with a 600+ score. Combine your hard work with smart work and map your preparation strategy around three important aspects i.e. learning, revising and practicing. Simplify and break the curriculum as per your convenience, but don’t miss out on any of the topics mentioned in the NEET syllabus. Stay motivated, follow your goals passionately, and always remember that it’s not about how hard you work, rather it’s about how you manage your time, resources and mind for strategic NEET preparation and a better outcome.
